Die Numbers

Between 1863 and 1880 silver and gold coins issued by the Royal Mint for circulation in the UK and its possessions had a die number inscribed on them. This followed similar limited experiments on halfpence and pennies in 1862 and 1863.

The following list of die numbers was based originally on an article in the COIN 1974 Year Book by Michael Mapleton. Later added to by Tony Clayton (of ‘Coins of the UK’ fame), to whom we should all be grateful.

The list is almost certainly not exhaustive. Information on numbers not already listed would be most gratefully received, but should not be construed as adding any value to the new find

The clarity of some die numbers leaves something to be desired, particularly on the sixpence.
